Learn about the IDA

We Think You Should Know more about the IDA

The IDA has been part of the Innisfil community for a long time. With the election of five new councillors we felt it was important to introduce ourselves to them with this deputation to Council on August delivered by IDA board member Megan Varga.

Good evening, Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Council and Staff.
The Innisfil District Association wanted to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves, as our mission is to inform and encourage Innisfil residents and landowners within the Lake Simcoe Watershed to work together, along with Council and staff, to create a sustainable community, with the health of Lake Simcoe as top priority.

The IDA has been instrumental in influencing developments within Innisfil to ensure appropriately strict environmental guidelines are implemented, with the protection of Lake Simcoe as our number one priority.  We have extensive experience navigating within legal and planning parameters, both Town and County Council protocols and the former OMB process, now known as the Ontario Land Tribunal.  We pride ourselves in sharing our vast knowledge to assist residents who are navigating the various steps of Town engagement.
Our goals include:

  • ·Ensuring a healthy environment encompassing Lake Simcoe and its watershed.
  • ·Encouraging sustainable economic development that benefits our community.
  • ·Promoting sustainability as the core value in local planning.
  • ·Working towards effective, accountable, open and transparent local government.
It is concerning to watch the rapid change of Provincial planning rules, endangering Natural Heritage Spaces, wetlands and woodlands.  Conservation Authorities have had their powers diminished. It is important, now more than ever, that Council and staff use existing tools to protect these spaces and ensure there is easily accessible public participation.  One of the most powerful tools Council has at its disposal is the Lake Simcoe Protection Act. You must ensure it is being used during all phases of planning.Although it is Council’s responsibility to consider staff recommendations, more importantly, it is Council’s obligation to listen to residents, represent their best interests and be the voice of the Lake. We look forward to working with Council to make Innisfil the best place to live and to ensure Lake Simcoe is considered and protected.
