Battling for the repeal of Bill 23

Battling for the repeal of  Bill 23

On November 28th, 2022, the Provincial government passed Bill 23, the “More Homes Built Faster Act.”
Amongst many other measures, this bill proposes to remove 7400 acres from the current Greenbelt, and significantly reduce development revenues from developers.

This shortfall in revenues will likely come in the form of higher taxes to residents, thereby subsidizing developer’s projects.
The Bill also significantly reduces the resources and legislative role of municipalities and Conservation Authorities when it comes to future development.
Many pop-up rallies have been held to oppose these measures at MPP’s offices all around Southern Ontario. A “Water Walk” was recently held in Barrie, led by Jeff Montague of the Beausoleil First Nations.  Citizens have been calling, writing to MPPs and making submissions to the Ontario Environmental Registry.

Bill 23, as currently proposed, will mean:

  • higher taxes for municipalities due to reduced Development Charges
  • more sprawl and less affordable housing
