Oak Wilt fungus has been detected in Niagara Falls and Sault Ste. Marie and Springwater Township. The fungus can kill an adult Red Oak in 2-6 weeks. It’s important for people to spot the signs of Oak Wilt. A fungal mat or pressure pad which happens beneath the bark. It can be white, grey or black.

It smells sweet

Fungal mats smell sweet and fruity like Juicy Fruit gum. Oak wilt can move from tree to tree through direct contact of roots that are touching belowground, or over much longer distances by sap beetles. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency advises that Oaks should not be pruned or cut down between April and November. Cut your oak in the cold months. Firewood should not be moved from the region.
